Post-Easter It with Mina Vaughn

TODAY’S BREW: The Vanilla of France

By Julie

Start your post-Eastering off right. Have some fun. HERE’S HOW:

In this saucy and funny domination romance, pin-up model Veronika Kane meets sexy, arrogant Aston Delano and decides to teach this playboy a lesson he’ll never forget. When Veronika Kane hears that she’s up for Miss Pin Up Las Vegas, she auctions off her classic hot-rod and decides to head out west. But when the man who bought her car, hot restaurateur Aston Delano, asks her to “show him the ropes,” his not-so-innocent question takes them down a surprising, sexy road. And as they travel cross-country as Domme/sub, their chemistry sizzles—as do the luscious meals Aston creates. Torn between the rediscovered pleasure of food and worry about staying in competition shape, Mistress Veronika unexpectedly finds herself as much a pupil as a teacher. Throw in long-distance trouble from her ex and from Aston’s family, and it’s a potential recipe for disaster. A road trip can be hard on any relationship—will this drive them apart, or will they buckle in for the long haul?

Rock Stars, Heroines, and Friends with Mina Vaughn

Today’s Brew:  I’m mixing it up. I got sweet cream creamer instead of  french vanilla. I am a wild woman.

by Kristen

Mina Vaughn and I have a lot in common. We live near each other, we both have books about vampires, we both love pin up anything, and now, we have something else in common. Rock star books.  HOW TO REPRIMAND YOUR ROCK STAR , the second book in the Domme-Nation series, came out a couple weeks ago and Keaton’s backside isn’t the only thing that’s glowing. So aren’t the reviews.  Mina likes to mix things up with her characters, and here’s a look into her writing process:

Guest Post: The Power of a Heroine’s Friends

By Mina Vaughn

As a writer, sometimes I try to make heroines both flawed but loveable. I try to make them complex, interesting, compelling. Then, what I do next is throw in a best friend as a foil, someone totally different from the heroine with another set of values and quirks. In How to Reprimand Your Rock Star, I selected two very different best friends for Thea.

One is a goofy roommate who always makes dirty jokes. Because we all have one of those.

The other is a seasoned Dominatrix. Because most of us do not have one of those.

Thea, my heroine, is conflicted. She’s got a dominant personality, but she’s a freshman on a national champion team and her voice isn’t heard. Here, having a friend like Callie helps. Callie is on the team, so she can act as a sounding board for Thea’s college and basketball gripes. She’s silly, where Thea is serious. She completes the part of Thea that needs someone her age and knows her struggles.

Then, when Thea is propositioned to dominate uber rock star Keaton Lowe, Thea needs the kind of help Callie could never provide. Enter Scarlett. Scarlett lives in town and operates a New Age shop that has a kinky back room. Thea is drawn to Scarlett’s intimidating personality and strength, and she soon learns that they are alike in one very important way—they are both dominants. Scarlett fills the other need in Thea’s life—a sexual role model. Thea knows she wants to dominate Keaton, but she doesn’t know how. Scarlett, however, is a professional in the field and she teaches Thea the lessons she needs to know if she wants to proceed in her relationship with the celebrity musician.

I added these characters for plot reasons, never expecting more than their use for various arcs. Then, once I sent this book out to beta readers, I found something surprising. It appeared that people were wanting more from Scarlett. I had no idea that this feisty and funny Dominatrix would get so much attention from my readers.

Then it dawned on me—she was the friend that many people didn’t have. Most groups of friends have a funny one, a serious one, a wacky wild card, and maybe a weird one that doesn’t quite fit in. Nobody has that friend who’s a Dominatrix, who can lecture you on the proper use of a violet wand and also lend you a vinyl bustier. I realized she was a fantasy in herself, a wild woman who did what she wanted and didn’t care about the confines of society or what people thought of her. My readers wanted to be friends with Scarlett as much as they wanted to bang the bejeezus out of Keaton.

So I think writers should think not only about what’s going to make a hero desirable, but what else can a story do to draw you into the fantasy? While I created Scarlett subconsciously, when writing my next book I am trying to consciously try to think of how else the story could capture a fantasy that maybe isn’t romance.

Thanks for having me, now go hug your own best friend!

COVER REVEAL: How To Reprimand Your Rock Star By Mina Vaughn

Today’s Brew:  I’m out of blueberry, so Gingerbread

by Kristen

A year ago this weekend, someone raised their hand in a NECRWA conference panel to tell us about her upcoming book. It was about a female domme who “spanked the hell” out of her submissive vampire.  Immediately, I knew I had to make friends with this author.  Mission accomplished. That author is Mina Vaughn, and the book How to Discipline Your Vampire.

Mina and her Domme-Nation series are back and the only way she could get closer to my heart was if she wrote about rock stars.

Without further ado, I give you the cover for HOW TO REPRIMAND YOUR ROCK STAR.

Release date is July 21, 2014.  You can, and of course should, add it to your Goodreads TBR right this very minute.

Do you need more convincing?  Here’s the blurb:

In this fun and saucy romance novel, all-star college basketball player Thea dominates on the courts—and off—with a rock star who is determined to win her over.

Thea is a star basketball player at UConn on track to be Rookie of the Year. That is, if she can stay focused on the game. Lately that hasn’t been going so well, as her knee has been bothering her. But that’s not the only thing on her mind…

Ever since rock star Keaton Lowe surprised her in the girl’s locker room, Thea can’t stop thinking about him. On top of his status and enticing ways, he seems to know everything about her. But some of his actions cross the line, and Keaton needs to be punished. Will Thea keep her head in the game, or get distracted by her other favorite pastime—reprimanding her rock star?

How To Discipline Your Vampire: Getting To Know Mina Vaughn

Today’s Brew:  Cherry Chocolate Swirl, as God intended

How To Discipline Your Vampire

When Mina Vaughn raised her hand in the NECRWA Supernatural Character panel and told us all about her book featuring a dominant schoolteacher who spanked the hell out of a vampire, I knew right then and there I had to be friends with this girl.  Later that day, she and I had lunch together at the world’s coolest lunch table (also featuring Eric Rubin and Tiffany Reisz), we exchanged contact info, and I got my wish.

I was lucky enough to get a crack at How To Discipline Your Vampire before its August 19 release date.  Not only do you get some supernatural BDSM, but you also get a sweet love story.  I asked Mina a couple questions about the book, her writing, and herself, and here’s what she had to say.

K:  Thanks for joining us, Mina!  Tell us, how did you start writing?

M: I’ve always written.  Even when I was a kid, I’d script out my playdates.  😉  I took some creative writing classes in college but didn’t really start writing in earnest until I turned thirty.

K:  I giggled a little when I saw you scripted your play dates! That isn’t a surprise to me after reading the book!  Who is your favorite character in How To Discipline Your Vampire?

M: Cerise.  It meant a lot to me to have a strong and confident heroine.  Lots of heroines are strong, but most second-guess themselves and don’t fully understand how wonderful they are.  I think this is to keep them from coming off arrogant.  But Cerise is hot, she knows it, but I hopefully don’t think she comes off as self-absorbed.  She’s cool, funny, and powerful.  I love her.

K: Which character did you create first?

M; William.  I wanted to imagine a guy who’d make your every fantasy come true.  Lots of thought went into this guy, for sure. 😉

K: Besides William, who are your top three vampires?

M: 1)  Spike from Buffy

2)  Edward from Twilight

3)  Eric Northman from True Blood

K: Now, you’re hanging out with those three vampires for a night. What do ya’ll do?

M: Wild ass foursome at a Coldstone Creamery.  Ice cream, toppings, and sexy vampires.  All night.  Sticky sweet goodness.

K: What vampire superpower do you wish you had?

M: I want to be able to not sleep.  I have too much to do!  Sleep is a waste. I love it, but I’d love to not need it.

K: Oh my God. I love sleep so much. I don’t know if I could live without it!  More superpowers: You are a self proclaimed shoe whore.  What is your favorite find ever?

M :A pair of Tory Burch leather lace-ups marked from $300 to $100.  I nearly died.  Wore them to both NECRWA and RWA Nationals and people went gaga over them.

K: They were pretty badass. What has been the best part of your journey to publishing so far?  What has surprised you?

M: Everything has been amazing, but the people I’ve met along the way mean the most.  My agent Jessica Sinsheimer, my editor Micki Nuding, the whole Gallery/Pocket team I met in Atlanta, and of course the writer friends (like you) who I met at conferences.

K: What advice would you give aspiring authors?

M: Don’t be afraid to be different, and keep trying until something clicks.

K: To wrap things up, I’ll ask my favorite question. What are you dying to share that no one else has asked you about so far?

M: I’m dying to see people liking a non-alpha hero.  I’ve heard some good feedback so far about how refreshing it is to see a guy who just wants to worship at your feet instead of growl and brood.  I’m excited that my William may be a different kind of swoony hero, and I hope other people think so as well!

Thanks for having me, Kristen!
